چکیده

This paper considers systems that can have different states corresponding to different combinations of available elements constituting the system. Each state can be characterized by a performance rate, which is the quantitative measure of a system’s ability to perform its task. Both the impact of external factors (attack) and internal causes (failures) affect system survivability, which is determined as the probability of meeting a given demand. In order to increase the system’s survivability a multilevel protection is applied to its subsystems. This means that a subsystem and its inner level of protection are in turn protected by the protection of an outer level. This doubleprotected subsystem has its outer protection and so forth. In such systems, the protected subsystems can be destroyed only if all of the levels of their protection are destroyed. Each level of protection can be destroyed only if all of the outer levels of protection are destroyed. In such systems, different protections play different roles in providing for the system’s survivability. The evaluation of the relative influence of the protections’ survivability on the survivability of the entire system provides useful information about the importance of these protections. The protection survivability importance index is introduced in order to evaluate this influence and an algorithm for evaluating the index is presented. The relevancy of protection is also considered. Illustrative examples are presented. Copyright c © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Protection Survivability Importance for Evaluating System Survivability in Multi-state Protection Systems

Importance measures are being widely used in risk-informed applications to characterize the importance of component failures, human errors, common cause failures, etc. In order to decrease the impact of external factors and increase the system survivability, a multilevel protection is applied to its components or subsystems. Each level of protection can have multiple states from perfect protect...

Emergent Algorithms Ñ A New Method for Enhancing Survivability in Unbounded Systems

Traditional security approaches are not sufficient to deal with the protection and survivability of highly distributed information systems operating in unbounded networks. This paper discusses the need for and importance of survivability, defines unbounded network, and examines the characteristics that differentiate survivability from other software quality attributes and nonfunctional properti...

Protection route Mechanism for Survivability in FTTH-PON Network

This paper described the proposed protection route mechanism and simulation of protection mechanism model in order to achieve survivability in PON-FTTH. Due to large transport capacity achieved by the network, failures which occur cause huge losses of data and greatly influence upon a large number of users over a wide area. Therefore, the survivability of the whole network has to be examined mo...

Multiple failure survivability in WDM networks with p-cycles

Preconfigured protection cycles or “p-cycles” can attain high capacity efficiency and fast protection switching times when deployed in WDM mesh networks. We consider the survivability of p-cycles in presence of multiple failures which can occur in larger networks.
